Hagåtña is the capital of Guam. Located on the western side of the island, Hagåtña is one of the least populated villages on Guam. Despite this, Hagåtña remains the political and cultural center of life on Guam. Many events and celebrations are held in Hagåtña throughout the year. Two of Guam’s major roadways, Route 4 and Marine Corps Drive, run through Hagåtña.
Hagåtña is derived from the Chamorro word for blood. When Guam was colonized by the Spanish, a mission was established in Hagåtña in the 1600s. Though the village was destroyed during World War II, today Hagåtña is thriving. Known for many years as Agana, the name was changed in 1998. Visitors enjoy many of the local historical sites including the Azotea, the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, San Antonio Bridge, Fort Santa Agueda, the Almacen Arches, the Governor’s House, the Pacific War Museum, and more. Other items of interest include the Guam Museum, the Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail, and La Sirena, a bronze statue of a mermaid.
Hagåtña is not known for its nightlife, but there are many restaurants, shopping areas, and government offices in the village. At the Chamorro Village, there is a Wednesday Night Market which features food, gifts, crafts, and more. Modern Realty Guam is also located in Hagåtña right in front of Ax Murderers Drive Shop!
